Ancestry Insider Blog article, 1940 Census Status Update for 16 April 2012, points out the various sites that are indexing the 1940 census and stated that FamilySearch.org as of April 16th has increased the amount indexed from 5% to 11%.
I checked the 1940 FamilySearch.org site and like the coloring of the different states to indicate where they are in the process. When you first go to the site, the United States is a bold U.S. flag and then changes into an outline of each state. Now move your cursor over a state, the site provides an 'update' [exact day/time not indicated] of that particular state. Alabama was found to be at 9%. The "Help Now" on the state percentage is an opportunity to participate in the FamilySearch indexing project. If you choose to do so, please indicate that you are part of the "NorthEast Alabama Genealogical Society" effort.
Site Administrator Comment: Thanks to the Ancestry Insider blog article, I was able to see the status of the states I'm most interested in. But I tend to agree with the first comment left for the blog article -- that the indexing by the various sites is "not a horse race". What we all want is "good indexing" -- not "sloppy". My personal thought as to why FamilySearch may be speeding ahead is the advanced work they did to get people involved before the images were released.
